Converge Network Digest published an article we submitted on Scaling Content for IPTV and WebTV. There is plenty of activity in this market but one of the most interesting observations I've noticed is that content providers tend to have a love/hate relationship with the content delivery networks (CDNs). On the one hand, they seem to need them to scale. On the other hand, most people I talk to wish they did not have to rely as much on the CDNs to reach their audiences effectively.
This article presents a new option to scale content delivery with owned, origin infrastructure based on centralized storage caching. If the response times and quality of service can be accomplished with less reliance on a CDN, content providers benefit. This is not to say that CDNs are going away anytime soon, nor that content providers will be able to eliminate the value CDNs provide. But it appears like there is room to shift some of the data delivery capabilities back to the content owners.

That's because today's audiences want the best of both worlds -- a huge library of titles to choose from, on demand. And while content-centric companies and media outlets strive to meet those needs, it is easy to serve either a small amount of data quickly, or make a large amount of data available with slower access times, not both.
But now solutions based on centralized storage caching give content businesses the best of all worlds: instant access to the most popular titles, a vast library archive to fit broad preferences, and the ability to effectively serve content from company-owned data centers.
