Communications News has published an article Gear6 submitted on Ratcheting Up Global Namespace Performance. The piece walks through a short history of SAN to NAS evolution, what is driving the need for global namespaces, and how to add performance to configurations that need both capacity management and high IOPS with low latency.

It is interesting that the same day this article appeared, F5 bought Acopia for $210 million. Acopia makes an Intelligent File Virtualization platform that implements global namespace technology. F5 has historically been known more for their server load balancing, application and WAN acceleration products, but it is clear that they now see a large opportunity closer to data center storage.
