Byte and Switch has an interesting story about Turner Broadcasting Systems and their plans in three big areas:
1. Holographic storage
2. An overhaul of the power system
3. Grid-based storage
While holographic storage might be a bit beyond the current thinking of most data center architects, items two and three should be top of mind. It is hard to find any significant data center products today that do not emphasize energy savings. And grid architectures are a big part of Oracle's next wave.
But what I found most interesting in this article, was the attention to one easy way to make things simpler and more cost effective in the Turner IT organization....reducing the overall number of hard drives.
As we've seen elsewhere, the future of storage technology might not be in the hard drive. And solutions that help reduce over-provisioning to create simpler configurations will spur operational savings including reducing excessive energy consumption.
