There have been numerous articles recently about the great
enterprise arms race. Fortune has a summary of the spending war between Microsoft and Google, Amazon has launched their S3 storage service hoping to profit from their
infrastructure competence, and Business 2.0 points out the “hundreds of
thousands of servers and petabytes of storage” Microsoft plans for their Windows Live service. Yahoo and eBay are also frequently mentioned in
similar contexts.
All of this points to massive scale deployments that will depend on data storage that is fast, accessible, and scalable. Will there be a consistent approach on storage architectures to match up with 100,000 servers? We'll be watching the horizon for perspective on these developments.
